Work on MARTA Overpass at W. Trinity Place and Atlanta Ave.

From thedecaturminute.com
The mural on the MARTA Overpass at W. Trinity Place and Atlanta Ave. is almost complete. The Milagros Collective, consisting of artists Felici Asteinza and Joey Filastre, began work on the mural in the middle of November.
The project was initially delayed in order to do a lead abatement on the steel girders and while the rain was much-needed, it caused more delay in the painting process. The artists worked for a month through the middle of December and one side of the mural is just about finished along with the pilings under the Overpass.
The other side has been pressure washed and primed and is ready for the detail work. Felici and Joey are part of a residency program at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) from the end of December through the end of January.
They will return to finish the mural the first week of April when the weather is warmer so the paint will adhere better.
In addition to finishing the mural, they will be working with Decatur Active Living and the community at the Decatur Housing Authority to enhance the area under the bridge. The area under the bridge has been funded by a KaBoom! Play Everywhere grant to create a playspace that will give the community a pleasant place to stop by and be physically active.
The space will be an extension of the mural and have features such as hopscotch, four-square, an artist-created bench and more. The space is also used as a bus stop by the adjacent community and once the mural is complete and the space is activated, it will be brighter, more welcoming, and add an element of fun to the area.

 From: http://www.accessatlanta.com/entertainment/dining/this-the-best-soup-atlanta-according-the-best-atlanta-poll/kmT9GWTBbYp7j1pHF971GP/
It's cold outside, and your soul is searching for the perfect soup in town. This week's Best of Atlanta poll found your favorite bowls of comfort.
Farm to Ladle was the clear winner for your go-to bowl of soup. With locations in Avalon and Ponce City Market, soul-soothing soup made with the freshest of ingredients is only a ladle full away.
Due to popularity, our second place winner Souper Jenny can now be found on the Westside, Decatur, Brookhaven and Buckhead. Run as a cafeteria-style restaurant, you get the opportunity to ponder the daily menu up close and personal. Bring a friend and enjoy your meal together or bring it home to savor.
The soups at Agavero Cantina in Lilburn are all the rage, winning them the #3 spot for best soup in town. Try the chicken or tortilla soup for the perfect cold-weather meal.
You don't have to travel far to find some of Atlanta's best soup. Be sure to try a bowl or two at Simply Fresh Market (Cobb), MetroFresh (Intown), Fresh To Order (Intown & DeKalb) and The General Muir (DeKalb).
Some of the most delicious foods are served hot. Case in point? Macaroni and cheese. Here's the official list of the best mac 'n cheese in town.
It feels like wintertime, and we know you're craving chicken and dumplings. Here's where you can find the best bowls that will hit the spot.

DeKalb Fire Station Mattress Makeover

Message*:
Good afternoon,

Beautyrest mattress is hosting a special donation ceremony in support of the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department next Monday, Dec. 12. I thought you may be interested in covering the project, which involves a "mattress makeover" for DeKalb County fire stations -- after all who is more deserving of a good night's sleep than first responders?

Once this year's donation is complete, Beautyrest will have given 235 mattresses to DCFRD so all DeKalb firefighters can get the restful sleep they need to perform optimally and keep residents safe.

I've provided a media alert below with information about Monday's event along with background about Beautyrest's Firehouse Recharge program for your reference. We'd love to see you out at DeKalb Fire Station 6 on Monday morning; however, if you're unable to attend, I'm happy to provide images and additional details as a follow up to the event.

Thank you,

Media Advisory – Monday 12/12

BEAUTYREST TO HOST DEKALB COUNTY FIRE STATION “MATTRESS MAKEOVER”
AND DONATION CEREMONY

- Firehouse Recharge initiative gives metro-area firefighters the restful sleep they need -

Next Monday, Dec. 12, Serta Simmons Bedding (SSB), LLC, will host a ceremony celebrating its donation of 235 Beautyrest® mattress sets to the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department (DCFRD). DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum will join company representatives and firefighters at DCFRD Station 6 at 9 a.m. for the mattress makeover followed by the brief ceremony at 10:30 a.m. This year’s donation includes 85 mattress sets, which – when combined with last year’s donation of 150 mattresses – will outfit all of the bunkrooms in DCFRD’s 26-station department covering 15 communities.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, Firehouse Recharge is the Atlanta-based Beautyrest brand’s philanthropic initiative to provide fire departments in Atlanta and the surrounding metro area with new mattresses, so firefighters get the restful, recharging sleep they need to keep our communities safe.

SSB believes in the importance of good, quality sleep for firefighters and the average person alike. Firehouse Recharge is an opportunity for the company to continue championing good sleep for those who need it most, while also creating a platform to inform and educate the public. With more than 100,000 yearly responses, and one of the largest territories in the state, there is hardly a team more worthy of restful sleep than the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department.

Beautyrest has donated more than 500 mattresses to local fire departments over the course of its ongoing initiative and plans to continue expanding its efforts to the greater metro area and beyond.

What: Beautyrest® Firehouse Recharge Mattress Makeover and Donation Ceremony

Who: Hosted by Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC. Interviews will be available with Darnell D. Fullum - DeKalb Fire Chief, Michelle Montgomery - Vice President, Beautyrest Marketing Communications and Station 6 Fire Rescue personnel.

NEWS RELEASE:

Renewal Design-Build, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q and Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q Teaming Up to Feed 1,000+ Homeless in Atlanta The Day Before Thanksgiving

The Day Before is a Pre-Thanksgiving Event Feeding 1,000+ Homeless Families in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA, November, 21, 2016 –On Wednesday, November 23 starting at 11 am, over 1,000 homeless people in Atlanta will enjoy a pre-Thanksgiving day feast at an event called The Day Before. The meals will be served at the Our House shelter located at 173 Boulevard NE, Atlanta, GA 30312 and at the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless located at 477 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30308.

Three local companies have teamed up to create and coordinate this event including: Renewal Design-Build of Decatur, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q of Atlanta and Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q of Atlanta who will be cooking and serving traditional Thanksgiving meals. Sysco Atlanta generously donated all 80 turkeys for the event. Additional funds raised will be used to purchase socks, hats and clothing for the homeless.

“It’s a great feeling to help those in need,” says David Michelson, President of Renewal Design-Build. “We are passionate about our commitment to our community, and we welcome opportunities to pitch in and help. It’s been gratifying to see other companies so eager to join in and make this a bigger and better event. We also hope to raise awareness so more individuals and companies get involved and make a difference in our community.”

Event History:

Two years ago, Anthony Hamilton, Jobsite Ambassador with Renewal Design-Build, organized an event to feed 500 people in Atlanta. He collected donations from employees and clients. When he started to organize the event again this year, he mentioned it to Mike Hufler, a partner with Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q. Hufler got excited and reached out to Jeremy Chambers, owner of the Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q in Atlanta, and Jonathan Fox, owner of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, who both readily agreed to help.

Here is a link to an 11 Alive feature about Anthony Hamilton and the 2014 event he coordinated:  http://www.11alive.com/news/local/southwest-atlanta/good-samaritan-provides-hundreds-with-hot-meals/253273064
Hamilton created the family tradition of feeding the homeless the day before Thanksgiving years ago. “My inspiration for the event came from memories of my own childhood and knowing what it was like to be hungry and in need,” said Hamilton. “I was helped by many good people along the way, and I wanted to instill the value of caring for others in my two sons. You never know when you may be on the other end and need a helping hand.”
ABOUT Fox Bros. BAR-B-Q:

Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q is an award-winning barbecue restaurant located just south of Little Five Points in Atlanta. They are known for their unique Southern-style barbecue with a Texas flair. The Fox brothers developed a sauce that mixes the flavors of Texas with the heat of the South. Bar-B-Q has become an Atlanta staple, with favorites like the renowned Beef Brisket and the Smoked Wing Basket. Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q has been featured on Good Day Atlanta, CBS Better Mornings, The Weather Channel, TLC and Fox News. For more information and reservations please call 404-577-4030 or visit www.foxbrosbbq.com. ABOUT Jim ‘N Nick’s Community Bar-B-Q:
