DescriptionI can feel the buzz in the area! Winnona Park residents are ready to clean out their house, garage and maybe even their car! Why? It’s time for the Winnona Park Community Yard Sale. This event will take place on Saturday, June 2nd from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

As in years past, printed maps and an online google map will be available marking the locations of the neighborhood homes participating in the event along with a short list of general items to be found at each location. These maps help bargain hunters quickly and easily find their treasures.

Participating in this annual event as a seller is a great opportunity to get rid of those unwanted items around the house and make a few dollars to boot.

If you would like to participate in this event as a seller and be included on the maps please register online at http://winnonapark.org/store. The deadline for registering online is midnight Monday, May 28, 2018.

If you would prefer to register by mail please print, complete and mail the registration form found at http://www.winnonapark.org/yardsale/YardSaleRegistration.pdf. The deadline for registering by mail is for a postmark no later than Friday, May 25, 2018.

Registering to participate in this community yard sale event is free to current members of the Winnona Park Neighborhood Association (WPNA). There is however, a $10 fee for non-members to participate. Again, registering secures inclusion on the maps. Further, knowing the number of participants and items for sale helps in the coordination and promotion of the event. You must register to be included on the maps.

If you are not a member of the WPNA but would like to support your neighborhood association and participate in the community yard sale event for free, this might be just the right time to join. The price of a one-year household membership is $20 while an individual membership is $15. Please visit http://winnonapark.org/dues.htm to join.

We look forward to another great Winnona Park Community Yard Sale.

Decatur Confederate Monument May Only Move a Few 100 feet on Decatur Square

Here is an update on the Removal of The Decatur Confederate Monument

 From:
 https://www.myajc.com

DeKalb commissioners plan to discuss whether the best option for a controversial Confederate monument is to move it to a new spot on Decatur Square.

That would keep it in the center of town near the old and new courthouses and MARTA station, but with room to add context about its origin and impact.

Commissioner Jeff Rader, the presiding officer, said keeping the monument on the square was put on the table because there has been so much difficulty finding it a new home somewhere else.
“We haven’t been able to really identify anybody that wants it in their neighborhood,” he said.
A coalition of activist groups doesn’t like this idea and has planned a protest rally for Saturday. They say the best option is to find county land somewhere else and move the 30-foot obelisk to a place that isn’t so prominent.
“So much of the issue with this monument is its location on the courthouse square,” said Sara Patenaude, co-founder of Hate Free Decatur that is sponsoring the event.
The #OfftheSquare rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Decatur Square. The coalition also includes the Beacon Hill and DeKalb chapters of the NAACP and Sankofa Church.
A subcommittee of the DeKalb Board of Commissioner will discuss the monument’s on Tuesday afternoon. Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson has proposed creating a task force to continue researching options and costs for its relocation, which the activist coalition supports.

New Cross Keys High to be built at former Briarcliff High site

 From: https://www.reporternewspapers.net
The DeKalb Board of Education approved building the new Cross Keys High School at the former Briarcliff High School site on North Druid Hills Road despite opposition from the three board members closest to the area. Other potential sites included several unnamed apartment complexes, which would have been too expensive to purchase and would displace hundreds of students, the school district said.
Board members Marshall Orson, Stan Jester and James McMahan spoke at the April 16 board meeting in opposition to the location, saying it would be inaccessible for many on Buford Highway due to the traffic. The vote was 4-3, with those three members voting no.
“Thousands live on the north and west side of I-85. We’d be pushing them through what has historically been ranked one of the ten worst transportation corridors in metro Atlanta,” Orson said.
The school district has allocated nearly $85 million in ESPLOST funding for the new 2,500-seat school. It is needed to alleviate overcrowding at the current Cross Keys High, which is located at 1626 North Druid Hills Road.
The Briarcliff site, a 26-acre property the district still owns, is located less than two miles south of Cross Keys High at 2415 North Druid Hills Road.

What was Petition outcome (How Many against Removal of 110 year old Confederacy Monument at Old Decatur Courthouse)?

It said there was a petition, How many were for and how many against removal?

 From : http://www.crossroadsnews.com

The 110-year-old monument to the Confederacy in Decatur Square will be removed, despite no one wanting to take it off the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners’ hands.
But how long the 30-foot-tall obelisk, erected in 1908 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, will remain in the city center is still unknown.
DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson wants the Lost Cause monument to be kept in storage until someone comes along who can take responsibility for it.
“We’re just trying to see what we can do legally, but the bottom line is it will be removed – we have the authority to do so,” she said April 10.
