Babar the Elephant is a popular French children's fictional character

This morning on the CBS Sunday Morning news show they had the story of Babar the Elephant a kids fictional character that started in 1933 an almost ended in 1946.

Babar the Elephant is a popular French children's fictional character who first appeared in L'Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931, and enjoyed immediate success. English language versions, entitled The Story of Babar, appeared in 1933 in Britain and the United States. The story is based on a tale that Brunhoff's wife, Cecile, had invented for their children. It tells of a young elephant called Babar who leaves the jungle, visits a big city, and returns to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants. Jean de Brunhoff published six more stories before his early death in 1937 at the age of 37. His son Laurent de Brunhoff was also a talented writer and illustrator and he carried on the series from 1946 with Babar et Le Coquin d'Arthur and many more. An animated TV series was produced by Nelvana Limited and Clifford Ross Company, and originally ran from January 3, 1989 to June 5, 1991. There were 78 episodes.

I had heard rumors of Decatur High playing with a white football because they did not have enough lights on the field. This photo shows it was true. Photo from 1949.

Does Decatur High School have one of those white footballs in their display case.?

Ahead of the Curve for Decatur Rec Center

Your eye on community development

By April Hunt, Eric Stirgus, Kevin Duffy, Michael Pearson

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

October 2008

Process begins in rehab of Decatur rec center

Decatur has begun what could be a several-year process to spruce up its aging recreation center.

Public meetings will be held over the next six months to get residents’ input on ideas for the 50-year-old center on Sycamore Street. The facility had served as the home court for Decatur High’s basketball team. But with the school building a new gym, the city can renovate the center and is looking for new uses, especially for the 1,000-seat gym.

“We are trying to find new ways to use the building that support active living in our community,” Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon said.

The city will pay $44,000 to LP3 Architects to hold the meetings and develop a master plan and schematics for the center. That project will include a cost estimate, expected to be at least several million dollars.

Work on any improvements could begin in 2010, but most likely it will start in 2011.

Fall gardening brings a ‘visual tapestry’ of plants

Fall gardening brings a ‘visual tapestry’ of plants
Oakhurst Community Garden director calls fall planting a gardener’s respite

By KATIE LESLIE
photo:MIKKI K. HARRIS/mkharris@ajc.com

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

October 2008

To heck with the heat and banish the bugs. Summer vegetable gardening surely yields a tasty crop of peppers and tomatoes, but often at the expense of sunburns and pesky critters running amok.

It might be enough to make novices give up their gardening gloves for the year, but take heart, says Stephanie Van Parys, executive director of the Oakhurst Community Garden in Decatur. Planting in the fall is a gardener’s respite.
What I like about fall gardening is there is so much more to grow after a wild, crazy insect-ridden summer,” she says. “Vegetable gardening in the winter is demure, contained, small and so much more manageable.”

And between the fuschia and yellow stalks of Swiss chard and the chartreuse of young lettuce, winter crops are vibrant with color.

“You can really create a visual tapestry as most plants grow to about 12 inches.”

Georgia is at the tail end of the summer growing season, and now is the time to get your fall planting done for a winter and spring harvest. And with dropping leaves allowing more light into Atlanta’s backyards, those who may not have been able to garden in the summer because of overabundant shade can now get in the game.

Van Parys says the garden, south of Agnes Scott College, is getting visits from increasing numbers of people interested in growing their own. Oakhurst’s gardening classes are regularly sold out with new crops of gardeners.

Louise Estabrook, agriculture and natural resource agent for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension-Fulton County, says she’s also seen a rise in interest. She was recently asked to help create community gardens in Sandy Springs, Roswell and Alpharetta.

Tim Watts, a software engineer, recently visited the Oakhurst Community Garden for ideas to start a community garden in Kirkwood.

“But with the way the economy is looking, who knows?” he says. “This may turn into more than a hobby.”
