From http://www.inoakhurstga.com/
Formerly one of Decatur’s best-kept secrets, Oakhurst’s active neighborhood association now brings in thousands of neighboring residents each year for the many festivals and events, such as the Jazz Nights at Scottish Rite, a Wine Tasting Festival, and the annual Oakhurst Arts Festival. The hub of Oakhurst is called “Oakhurst Village,” which showcases some of the finest in local restaurants and shops in Intown Atlanta. Other amenities that simply add to the “neighborhood” package include the Oakhurst Dog Park, McKoy park, Oakhurst Community Garden, as well as the historic Scottish Rite Hospital.

Decatur Live Well event Saturday Sept. 25th 8-4 p.m.
This sent in by kash@bigpeachrunningco.com
Hello!
Big Peach wanted to get the word out about our Live Well Event taking place this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.!!! Please post on your blogs---we really appreciate you guys and gals making Decatur such a wonderful place to work, live and play!
On Sept. 25th we will be hosting an event with Subaru, SORBA, Nantahala, Blue Ridge Outdoor and Bicycle South at the Decatur Big Peach Running Co. on 114 E. Trinity Place (behind City Hall and across from Chick-fil-A). There will be a scavenger hunt that coincides with this event that will start that Saturday morning. Additionally, there will be Subaru cars available to test-drive for customers, a Bicycle Skills Demo area presented by Bicycle South, a variety of outdoor gear presented by Blue Ridge Outdoors and a cool kayak area with an outdoor pool provided with Nantahala.
Every person who test-drives a Subaru vehicle will receive a $20 gift certificate to the vendor of their choice (who is participating in the event). There will be prizes for all the finishers of the scavenger hunt along with some really cool items for the top three teams.
Here's the skinny as appears in our e-newletter (below). People can sign up for the scavenger hunt on our website under the Clinics tab.
"The" Event
What are you doing Saturday? We've got a day planned that is just as colorful as the autumn leaves. The festivities take place at BPRC Decatur. We kick things off at 8:00am with another one of our famously fun scavenger hunts. Teams of 2 join forces as they test their knowledge with our pre-run trivia contest. The team with the most correct answers gets their scavenger hunt clues first. With a digital camera or a cell phone with camera in hand, the team then uses their puzzle solving and navigational skills on a 3-5 mile course. The first team back is not necessarily the winner. The team that most successfully completes the course wins.
OK, that's just the beginning. Here's the rest of the story:
Subaru/Big Peach Live Well Event.
Between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm, Stivers Subaru of Decatur is bringing several of their latest and greatest models to BPRC for you to test drive. Subaru is the Official Car of BPRC, and no doubt you've seen our fleet around town. And, get this everyone taking a car out for a spin will receive a $20.00 BPRC gift card. (You must be 18 years of age to test drive a car, and present your driver's license to be eligible.)
That's pretty cool, for sure, but there's so much more! Stivers Subaru isn't the only F.O.P. (Friend of Peachy) coming out to play:
Bicycle South is setting up a bicycle skills demo area, where not only can you check out some great bikes, there will also be a skills contest.
SORBA (Southeast Off-Road Bicycle Association) will be available to answer any questions you may have about mountain biking, and the great trails we have right here in town!
The Nantahala Outdoor Center is bringing a demo pool to show you some amazing kayak tricks and moves.
Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine rounds out the day with great outdoor gear for you to check out.
Please let us know if you're planning on participating in the scavenger hunt by signing up below. Otherwise, just come by anytime between 8:00 and 4:00 to enjoy the fun. There will be prizes and give-aways throughout the day, so plan on spending some time with us!

September 2010 – On Saturday, November 6th, participants will return to Dearborn Park to root out invasive plants for the 3rd annual Park Renewal Day competition. Each year, this joint effort of Renewal Design-Build, the DeKalb County Parks Department and City of Decatur’s Active Living Division, has well over 100 participants – all competing for prize money sponsored by Renewal – clear more than an acre of English ivy and Chinese privet from the park.
Teams will compete for the grand prize of $1,000, while second and third place teams will take home $300 and $200, respectively. Each team’s assigned plot will be scored by County Park experts and local celebrities. Food, music and the awarding of prizes follow the competition.
Any group willing to come together to help the park and raise money is eligible and should register as soon as possible. Teams in past years have included school organizations, neighborhood associations, and Scout troops. Last year, the Decatur High School Close Up Club used its prize winnings to help fund a spring trip to Gettysburg.

"Cradle to College Pipeline" is a Win Win for Charles Drew Charter School
Great article By D. Aileen Dodd
for the AJC
Drew Charter School is a central part of the $103 million renewal of the East Lake neighborhood that began in the mid-1990s. The project replaced the squalid East Lake Meadows housing project -- long described by police as a war zone -- with stylish apartments, a renovated golf course, an upgraded YMCA and Drew, which has 880 students from preschool to eighth grade.

UPS Drops "What can brown do for you" Slogan for "We [heart] logistics"
By Arielle Kass
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In a love affair a decade in the making, Sandy Springs-based UPS launched a new slogan and ad campaign Monday -- "We [heart] logistics" -- leaving "What can brown do for you?" at the curb.
The change represents the company's first global marketing campaign and a new focus on its non-package delivery capabilities. While shipping remains the foundation of UPS' business, Christine Owens, senior vice president of communications and brand management for UPS, said the acquisition of more than 40 companies over the past 12 years has allowed UPS to create a worldwide logistics network.
With the new ads, UPS is alerting small and mid-sized businesses to its capabilities providing services from transportation to financing to technology to allow companies to do business anywhere in the world. Competitors include Penske Logistics, Ryder and DHLajc story

Surprise Visit - John Mayer Jams @ Eddies Attic Tuesday Night
You’re an internationally renowned musician, in the middle of a tour - what do you do on a rare off night?
For John Mayer, the answer was easy as he prepared for a show on his “Battle Studies” tour in Atlanta: Go back to where it all started.
Tuesday night Mayer tweeted around 10:30 p.m., “Atlanta people! Lets jam out at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. 11:30pm. Heading over now.” By the time it hit 11:30 p.m. the line wrapped around the block and down the street for a rare 21+ show for only $10.
Eddie’s Attic is where it all started for Mayer a decade ago when he was a struggling musician, so the surprise show was a homecoming of sorts. At one point Mayer couldn’t remember the lyrics to an old song and asked if there were any “super fans” in the audience who could help him with the words.

So you’re looking at the list of authors scheduled to appear at the AJC Decatur Book Festival and you’re overwhelmed with all of the choices. Do you go see this author that you really wanted to see at 1:30 p.m., or do you skip him and go see this other author that you really, really wanted to see — but who is also speaking at 1:30 p.m.? Hmmmm. What’s a book lover to do?
Here are a few suggestions for you; some obvious, others not so. Just some possibilities to consider, unless you’ve figured out how to be in two places at the same time. All locations are in Decatur.

Just "Conan" Will be Conan O'Brien's Late Night Show Title
by Kyle Anderson in Television
Well, Conan O'Brien didn't end up going with any of the helpful suggestions put forth this morning. And apparently all those stories about the late night host not being able to use the name "Conan" because of the makers of the "Conan" movies were unfounded, as O'Brien announced today that his new show will be called simply "Conan." In a video posted to his show's official TBS site, O'Brien talked about how much the media had been wondering about the title (including one persistent Italian journalist/pizza maker) and how he had come to a simple, elegant conclusion. He also joked about the kick off date for the show (he initially said December 8, but was corrected by somebody off-camera with the actual date, which is November 8 — "Of this year?" O'Brien exclaimed) and noticed that the title he wrote on the piece of paper for the reveal sort of looked like "Conaw."

Local gift chain Swoozie's reopens two Atlanta stores, plans for more growth
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For two months, there was no such thing as Swoozie's, the Atlanta-based paper and gift retailer. For several months prior to that -- when a liquidation sale that began in March emptied the stores of all merchandise and fixtures -- the company might as well as have ceased to exist.
President Kelly Plank-Dworkin, who always prided Swoozie's on building relationships with customers who walked in the door, said the liquidation was "devastating." Long-time customers coming in for housewarming gifts or wedding invitations didn't get the service they were used to.
"I couldn't even shop in the shopping center. It was very painful," she said. "Every day, I had to wake up and put one foot in front of the next, decide what to do."
What Plank-Dworkin did was work hard to save the store, which she described as her life. She separated the intellectual property -- Swoozie's name and concept -- from a bankruptcy filing. Just after the liquidation ended, it was sold at auction to the Colorado private equity firm Gart Capital.
Today, two Swoozie's stores have reopened in Atlanta along with five others across the South.
