Krog Street Tunnel Art Painted Over in protest of Masquerade Ball
fROM: http://www.11alive.com/story/news/local/2014/10/23/krog-street-tunnel-graffiti-erased-n-protest-of-masquerade/17760145/
ATLANTA -- The street art decorating the Krog Street Tunnel is a thing of the past. It's been covered with gray paint.
A group of approximately one hundred people gathered with spray cans and roller brushes around 10 p.m. Wednesday night in protest. In less than an hour they covered every inch of street art that has made the tunnel an iconic piece of Atlanta for years.
They did not want the colorful designs along Krog Street walls to serve as a backdrop for the Krog Masquerade.
That masquerade ball is scheduled for Saturday night when the Krog Street Tunnel will host up to 2000 people celebrating the Halloween season, paying $50-$100 a ticket to attend.
The protest organizer said the "whitewashing" of the tunnel walls was a way of removing their decor from the event.
"We're not going to give away this art for free to somebody who is trying it make money off of it. Street art, public art, should be free for all. it shouldn't be privatized," he said.
Supporters of the event have taken to social media, stressing that the Krog Masquerade will go on as scheduled and are asking their online connections to "#MeetMeInTheTunnel."

Decatur is rich with parade history beginning way back in 1899 with Maury Mable. Ole' Maury donned his black silk top hat and paraded down Ponce de Leon Ave annually for 51 years.
Sometimes the parades were huge; sometimes they were just him!
Rolling holiday parades have been scarce of late.
That is, until the fun-loving HomeGrown Decatur gals decided to bring parading back to Decatur. We like Maury Mable's style!

Don't Forget the 2nd Annual Avondale Estates Garden Club Tree Walk October 25th
Local arborists who will lead the walk include Mark Livingston, Arborguard; Gretchen Musser, Elements of Landscape Design; Neil Norton, ISA Certified Arborist; Gary Peiffer, Dekalb Co. Extension Agent; Steve Sanchez, HGOR; and Joan Scales, U.S. Forestry Commission.
Tree Walk Guides will point out the enormous benefits trees add to the urban environment, such as:
• For every ton of new wood that grows, about 1.8 tons of carbon dioxide is removed from the air and 1 .3 tons of oxygen is produced;
• One recent study reported that urban trees could be about 10 times as effective as forest trees for lowering carbon dioxide in cities;
• Trees provide climate control & moderate the “heat island” effect of the urban setting;
• Trees protect soil and water quality.
To take part in this free event, meet in the parking lot of the Avondale Community Club at 59 Lakeshore Drive at 10:00 am. A new feature of this year’s walk will be the opportunity to ask a panel of experts about any concerns homeowners have with trees in their landscapes. The Avondale Estates Garden Club is a member club of The DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., the Redbud District of GCG, and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Pallookaville Fine Foods Jim Stacy gets his own Show
From: http://radiotvtalk.blog.ajc.com/2014/10/14/quirky-atlantan-jim-stacy-lands-his-own-cooking-channel-show/
The tall, bearded, jovial Jim Stacy is already known in Atlanta for his quirky ways. His resume includes nightclub owner, punk-rock musician, tattoo artist and even professional Santa Claus. His “Get Delicious’ specials on Public Broadcasting Atlanta are consistent ratings draws for the local network.
Now a national audience will get to appreciate Stacy’s avuncular ways with a new Cooking Channel show debuting Friday night called “Offbeat Eats with Jim Stacy.”
“I’m no fancy chef but I know how to cook, I know how to eat and I know how to have fun,” he said in his opening pilot, which is already available on the Cooking Channel website and first aired in the spring on the TV network itself. “It’s all about getting off the beaten path. I’m looking for the rebels making innovative food all across America not in the tourist traps but only the places I can take you.”
The pilot has a theme about one of his favorite subjects: monster movies. He starts in Midtown Atlanta with Villains Wicked Heroes, where each sandwich is named after a classic villain from an old movie (The most popular sandwich is named after a classic James Bond classic villain Odd Job, which is spicy Korean chicken.)
During the show, he provides his expertise and critique while interviewing the owners.

By Jennifer Brett
Michael Douglas is back in Atlanta to work on the Marvel project “Ant-Man,” which also stars Paul Rudd. See photo here
The plot, per imdb: “Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”
Some other background here.
The project is based out of the new Pinewood Studios facility in Fayetteville but is filming elsewhere throughout the metro, including the state archives building where several trees were removed to make for better camera access. (Local environmentalists = not amused.)
Douglas and Rudd each have filmed here before, Douglas for “Last Vegas” and Rudd for “Anchorman 2″ and Wanderlust.

New Play for Middle Schoolers at the Alliance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alliance Theatre Premieres NEW PRODUCTION DEVELOPED FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS – COURAGE
Inspired by the American civil war drama the red badge of courage
ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 7:00 PM
ATLANTA, October 8, 2014 — Playwright Scott Warren (The Grimm Lives of the Inbetweens) and Alliance Theatre Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families Rosemary Newcott, in collaboration with middle school students in the Alliance’s acting camps, have developed a new play for middle school students.
COURAGE, inspired by the American Civil War drama The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, delves into middle school life through media, metaphor, and storytelling. COURAGE re-examines the classic story through the lens of the courageous tales of grown-up challenges facing young people in contemporary Atlanta. Fall into the imagination of characters who explore themes of isolation, respect, duty, and courage through homework, video games, and long waits at the bus stop.
COURAGE features a talented local cast – Lauren Boyd (Alliance: The Tall Girls) as Wilson Conklin, Matthew Felton (Alliance: The Grimm Lives of the Inbetweens) as Hank Flemming, Stephanie Lloyd (Atlanta Lyric Theatre: Anything Goes) as Rebel Davis, and J.L. Reed as Jefferson Pratt.
“If someone asked me what inspired me most about the middle school students I know, I would have to say, it would be their courage,” said Director Rosemary Newcott. “Like Henry in Red Badge of Courage, these young people's worlds are drastically changing, physically and emotionally, and yet they handle it all with profound ideas and wild, wonderful humor. Playwright Scott Warren and I wish to thank the 100+ middle school students who shared their stories with us. We hope the play reflects the joys, challenges and complexities of their middle school skirmishes.”
The Alliance is also thrilled to be a part of the City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs “Cultural Experience Project.” Now celebrating its 10th year, the Cultural Experience Project was launched to afford every Atlanta Public School (APS) student from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to experience the city’s premier art and cultural venues. The City of Atlanta’s vision is for every student in APS to have minimally one onsite cultural experience at a cultural venue each year that directly ties to Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and curriculum goals. Teacher and student educational materials further the students understanding of arts and culture and compliment the age and grade level-appropriate experiences.
Through the CEP, all sixth graders in APS, nearly 3,000, will have the opportunity to see COURAGE – making it one of the only cultural experiences offered by the program that is developed specifically for students in their age category.
Performances are available for school groups and home-school groups Monday-Friday, October 30-November 5, and November 7, 2014 at 9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Touring performances are also available to visit area schools, October 15-24 and November 10-14. Most appropriate for grades 5-8, and connecting to Curriculum Standards: CCRL.3; SS5H1.e; TAE/MS.1; TAE/MS.8; TAE/MS.11. Tickets for school groups are discounted. To book your field trip or in-school performance, call 404.733.4661 or email allianceschoolday@woodruffcenter.org. Learn more about all field trip opportunities at http://alliancetheatre.org/content/field-trips.
The only public performance is Monday, November 3, 7:00pm.
Tickets are available online at www.alliancetheatre.org/grimmlives or by calling 404.733.5000. Discount rates for groups of 10 or more are available by calling 404.733.4690. Discount rates are also available for members of the military, seniors and students. The Alliance Theatre is located at The Woodruff Arts Center, at the corner of Peachtree and 15th Street, in Midtown Atlanta.

Calendar Listing Synopsis:
COURAGE (world premiere)
Alliance Stage
Written by Scott Warren in collaboration with metro Atlanta middle school students
Directed by Rosemary Newcott
November 3, 7:00 pm
An experience tailor-made for middle school students, Courage collides the contemporary experience of today with Stephen Crane’s classic tale, The Red Badge of Courage.
