D.B. COOPER Leaped into History 38 Years Ago .

Today marks the 38th anniversary of the disappearance of D.B. Cooper, who on Thanksgiving Eve 1971 hijacked a Seattle-bound jetliner and parachuted into history with $200,000 in ransom money. It remains the nation's only unsolved skyjacking.

It is truly a great unsolved crime. The facts are as follows:

On a rainy Thanksgiving Eve in 1971

(November 24, 1971)

A passenger who gave his name as ‘Dan Cooper’ (the "D.B." is based on later errors in the media, but has become more widely known) boarded Flight 305 in Portland, Oregon, bound for Seattle. Using the threat of a bomb in his suitcase, Cooper hijacked the plane shortly after take off.

It landed in Seattle, where Cooper released the passengers unharmed in exchange for his ransom demands being met: $200,000 in unmarked bills and 4 parachutes. After taking on these items, Cooper directed the crew to take off once more, and fly to Reno, Nevada.

During this second flight, he sent all the crew to the cockpit, and parachuted from the plane with the money. He was never apprehended, and although approximately $5000 was later found in the area that he parachuted into, nothing else ever was. Cooper has never been identified, and his true name may never be known. The FBI has stated that it believes him to have died upon landing, and decayed to nothing before he could be found. Of course, they also claimed that he was rude and abusive in conversations with them, which is at variance with the recollections of the crew members who heard these conversations, so it’s possible that the Bureau may be engaged in a certain amount of ass-covering.

The foundation was established by the the estate of Charles Edwin Suber, who died in 2007. Suber, a 1942 graduate of Oxford College, retired from the Fulton County Superior Court as court clerk.

Oxford College officials said $100,000 from the gift will create a scholarship named after Suber. The remaining $3.25 million will go toward the college's building plans, which include a new library and science facility.

Going on Holiday, Try Georgia's State Parks

Go for the Holidays in Georgia's State Parks

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Georgia State Parks are making it easy and affordable for you to enjoy family time this holiday season. Come celebrate in Georgia’s great outdoors with a cornucopia of festive events, diverse recreational opportunities, and hotel-style lodge rooms with special winter rates.

Looking for budget-friendly activities to do with the kids during school break? Head to the parks for everything from visits with Santa to Christmas tree displays. Below is a sampling of the holiday festivities, and a complete calendar is listed at www.GeorgiaStateParks.org/events.

Christmas Tree for Decatur Square

This news is from Little Shop of Stories blog.
clip art from openclipart.org

Decatur is a fantastic town to live in. We have festivals, parties, concerts and independent shops and restaurants. We have Beach Parties and Book Festivals, live music in the spring and a community bonfire in the winter. But for the past few years there has been no Decatur Christmas tree, no gathering of the masses to sing carols and eat goodies and spread holiday cheer. This year we decided to change that.

Some Dekalb Schools to get iPods

The system, which won $193,740, will hand out iPods and netbooks (mini laptops) to about 300 students at three high schools; Cross Keys, Stone Mountain and MLK Jr., next semester.

By Kristina Torres

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

For the first time in its history, the Georgia Department of Education this month will hand out grants for schools to pioneer the use of “handheld computing” to see if it engages students better than traditional book-and-paper methods.
The move goes beyond the use of computers and the Internet for class work, now a common occurrence in schools.

Rather, it endorses for public schools the idea of mobile learning through small devices such as an Apple iPod Touch or Microsoft Zune — devices that connect wirelessly to the Internet and have the capability for Web-based research and e-mail but heretofore have often been banned from use during school hours as distractions.

It means not just recording podcasts or e-mailing teachers, activities that a growing number of schools also sanction. As envisioned by state officials, these devices would be the primary, everyday learning tool of students in class and at home. Class projects, homework and research reports will all go digital.

A Grand Central StationTerminal for Atlanta?

By Ariel Hart
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A plan to build a major passenger terminal in downtown Atlanta might soon boast new life, in the form of an $80 million-plus jump start, state officials said at Transportation Board meetings Wednesday and Thursday.
The idea has reeled in big supporters, but raised questions too -- including whether it's legal.

Congress long ago earmarked $87 million to partially fund a commuter rail line through Lovejoy, but Georgia has spent little of it, as state and local officials struggled to find funds to pay the remaining cost.

The second annual Park Renewal Day a Success

This sent in by Kelly Cheek of Renewal Design-Build

Local Organizations Team Up Against Ivy, Privet for Cash

November 16, 2009, – On November 7th, teams from local organizations and schools came out to compete for prize money as part of an ongoing effort to rid local parks of invasive plants and debris. By the end of the second annual Park Renewal Day, hosted by Renewal Design-Build, the DeKalb County Parks Department, and City of Decatur, competitors at Dearborn Park were weary from pulling up ivy and privet, but had a real sense of accomplishment and community.

Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd and DeKalb County COO Keith Barker assisted in the scoring of the teams’ plots. The prize money, donated by Renewal Design-Build, was given to the five highest-scoring teams. The grand prize of $1,000 went to the Midway Woods Neighborhood Association - appropriately named “Ivy League” - while two teams from Decatur High School students won 4th and 5th places. Groups from Hands On Atlanta and All Souls Fellowship also took home top prizes. A celebration of food and music from local Decatur band, The Grits, followed the cleanup.

The success of this public/private initiative has incited talks of expanding the event into other areas of Atlanta and to other parks. “In just a few hours, we saved over 100 old growth trees from being strangled by invasive plant species, and prize money was put back into the community,” says Renewal CEO and Park Renewal Day co-founder, Peter Michelson. “It’s amazing what can happen when you give people an incentive.”

And, the proof is in the park. “It’s great to see what the community’s efforts have brought to Dearborn Park,” says Mayor Bill Floyd. “If you haven’t walked through, do so.”

Arduous process leaves Decatur High with upgrade

Decatur,GA

By Jeff Haws
AJC

Even nine years ago, he could see it.
On a plot of land where nothing stood, newly minted Decatur High School athletics director Carter Wilson had a vision of a facility that could finally give his basketball team its own gym and could provide the school with some of the best athletics facilities in the state in the process.
He also could see the dire need for an upgrade to the football stadium, which the city has stated was the oldest lighted stadium in continuous use in the country at the time.

Wilson saw a state-of-the-art gym, a new football stadium and facilities for other activities, including an auditorium, both men's and women's locker rooms, all rising out of the ground on an aging plot of land that hadn't been used for school improvements in many decades.

But it's a long, arduous road from vision to reality. It took nine years for Wilson, who also is the boys basketball coach, to walk into his new gym. And it took three just to get moving toward the goal.

A Visit to the Junktique

"Thunder Road" is Cult Classic Movie

Thunder Road is a cult classic, it played at The Decatur Theatre back in OCT. of 58.

Thunder Road is the title of a 1958 drama-crime film about running moonshine in the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1950s. It was directed by Arthur Ripley and starred Robert Mitchum, who also produced the film and co-wrote the screenplay, and is rumored to have directed much of the film himself. He also co-wrote (with Don Raye) the theme song, "The Ballad of Thunder Road".

Parking Spaces to much for Home Depot

Ever think a Home Depot parking lot is too sprawling and vacant? Home Depot does, too.
“A number of stores have barren asphalt, and it’s not in anyone’s best interest to leave it sitting there,” said Mike LaFerle, Home Depot’s vice president of real estate.

Round two of Decatur's Dearborn Park cleanup competition

By Ty Tagami
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Despite the economic downturn, the organizers of what is becoming an annual park cleanup in Decatur are again offering cash to inspire volunteers.
Last year, Decatur-based Renewal Construction Co. gave $1,000 to the team that uprooted the most ivy, privet and kudzu from Decatur's Dearborn Park.
On Saturday, the company will again partner with Decatur and DeKalb County to host the competition, dubbed Park Renewal Day. Community members and officials from both governments will judge competing teams' plots. Renewal is donating a total of $2,100 to be divided among the winner and four runner-up teams, according to the event Web site, www.ParkRenewalDay.com. Last year, the event attracted 145 volunteers, and the winners donated their prize money to charity.
