Round two of Decatur's Dearborn Park cleanup competition

By Ty Tagami
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Despite the economic downturn, the organizers of what is becoming an annual park cleanup in Decatur are again offering cash to inspire volunteers.
Last year, Decatur-based Renewal Construction Co. gave $1,000 to the team that uprooted the most ivy, privet and kudzu from Decatur's Dearborn Park.
On Saturday, the company will again partner with Decatur and DeKalb County to host the competition, dubbed Park Renewal Day. Community members and officials from both governments will judge competing teams' plots. Renewal is donating a total of $2,100 to be divided among the winner and four runner-up teams, according to the event Web site, www.ParkRenewalDay.com. Last year, the event attracted 145 volunteers, and the winners donated their prize money to charity.

Nissan's Leaf is out next year

Nissan's Leaf is out next year; a year after that comes the Reva NXG, recently shown off at the Frankfurt motor show.

It's a similarly equipped little plug-in, with the emissions of a butterfly and the driving range of a bee: it lasts 125 miles and can go 80 MPH. Perfect for Pittsburgh, but not so much for anything that involves tasks other than shopping and commuting. Unless it is making technologically suspect "MPG" claims, of course! But still, I want one: in pastel lime green, naturally. And with a free tankful of electrons.

Hitchcock's Classic "THE BIRDS" Plays at The Strand Theatre

Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie "THE BIRDS" is one of the mosting chilling movies back in the day, and last night The Strand Theatre had a special Halloween showing, which we attended, it was part of the theatres Halloweekendz.
Sure, we could have watched this on the small screen (TV or DVD), but seeing this classic on the Big Screen in the newly refurbished (including original seats) old theatre was worth it.
The movie goers that were there knew every scene and would say out loud the campy sayings, and the audience laughter when the kids were attacked at the party and the school was a hoot, we had a blast. We will go again to see some classic's that they show during the year on special hoildays.

Decatur 2009 Halloween Yard Displays

NBC’s ‘30 Rock’ visits ‘Stone Mountain’ tonight

AJC Rodney Ho

NBC’s “30 Rock,” the Emmy-winning comedy, features a former Conyers resident Jack McBrayer, who plays innocent NBC page Kenneth.

Kenny’s fictional hometown? Stone Mountain.

So in tonight’s episode, according to the NBC tease, Liz (Tina Fey) and Jack (Alec Baldwin) venture to Stone Mountain to seek new talent.

It’s fairly clear that the show writers are not going to portray the real Stone Mountain, which is a suburban area packed with Krogers, gas stations and fast-food joints. Rather, it will probably be an updated version of Mayberry.

We are going to get Gary Peet, the mayor of the real Stone Mountain, to watch the show tonight and critique it. He is aware of the show, he said, but is not a regular viewer. I’ll post his thoughts tomorrow.

Donald Glover, a Stone Mountain native, used to write for “30 Rock” and was the source of the name. His bosses like that name because it sounded hick and Kenneth is kind of hick. What’s funny is McBrayer’s actual former residence of Conyers is relatively close by. (Glover now plays Troy on NBC’s comedy “Community”)

This the promo for tonight online but it doesn’t address the Stone Mountain story line.

Vacant office space could take years to fill

I think Decatur is having this problem also, not only office space, but retail spots as well, good example is the old McDonough St. Market/Jakes Ice Cream shop, that spot is a prime location.
It's been a year since they moved out.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta is so swamped with vacant office space that it could take a dozen years to fill it all – and that’s if the metro area returns to the robust growth it had before the recession.
The glut of commercial space -- most apparent in Buckhead with more than 3 million square feet of empty space -- raises challenges to any thoughts of constructing new towers in metro Atlanta for years to come. It also underlines the difficulties building owners and managers face snagging tenants in a market with far more supply than demand.

Your tour begins in the heart of Downtown Decatur's Historic Town Square. A diverse enclave of quaint shops and restaurants that share common space with the ghosts of Decatur's exciting past. A stop at one of the oldest two story homes in Decatur where it's been said spirits haunt the walled up fireplaces and move freely about the grounds. We will travel down small streets untouched by time to the old train depot where late at night... the cries of the wounded soldiers might be heard, or the ghost of the station master might stare back from across the tracks. You will never forget the twilight visit to Old Decatur Cemetery... some of the city's most notable citizens are interred here. Be sure to bring your camera and don't be surprised if you capture orbs and apparitions.

SHARIAN INC. Since 1931

vintage ad circa 1956

~SHARIAN~
A Family Passion Since 1931

At Sharian, we have been selling, restoring and cleaning Fine Oriental Rugs for more than 70 years. Rugs have been the focus of our family for four generations. What does this mean for our customers? It means we are here to stay. We have a long history of service and integrity. And we really know our business.

Sharian was started in 1931 by Bedros and Varthouhi Sharian, and Varthouhi's brother Lutfig Geovkalayjian, Armenian immigrants who came to Atlanta in the early 1920s. The Sharian's son Bedros Sharian, Jr., led the firm along with his brother Paul, beginning in the 1950s.

Today, Bedros's children Ruth, Ritchie and Bedros III, and Paul's daughter, Lydia, are involved in running the company day-to-day. Paul has retired, but Bedros, Jr. still serves as chairman emeritus, and works every day in the showroom. The next generation of Sharians, starting with Ruth's son, Jim, is not far behind.

Our customer showroom and cleaning facility is on Decatur's main street, Ponce de Leon Avenue, where our building's art deco façade has attracted visitors since 1946.
