Worthmore Jewelers to Host free personal Safety Seminar

Worthmore Jewelers to Host free personal Safety Seminar
From the Decatur Minute
by Catherine
With the holiday season fast approaching, Worthmore Jewelers continues its long-standing tradition of giving back to the Atlanta community it calls home. This year, Worthmore will kick off the season of giving with a free personal safety seminar in Decatur on Nov. 13.

The seminars will be led by local safety expert Michael Briant of SKYDAS Group International — an award-winning strategic security consulting firm. Briant will focus on preventative instruction — encouraging situational awareness, understanding criminal methodologies, and identifying outlying behaviors — with supplementary physical self-defense instruction offered by Highland Martial Arts later in the evening.

Community members of all physical skill levels are invited to attend the seminars.

The event will be held at the Decatur Recreation Center in downtown Decatur (231 Sycamore St.) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy complimentary Raging Burrito appetizers along with the safety seminar.

Krog Street Tunnel Art Painted Over in protest of Masquerade Ball

fROM: http://www.11alive.com/story/news/local/2014/10/23/krog-street-tunnel-graffiti-erased-n-protest-of-masquerade/17760145/
ATLANTA -- The street art decorating the Krog Street Tunnel is a thing of the past. It's been covered with gray paint.

A group of approximately one hundred people gathered with spray cans and roller brushes around 10 p.m. Wednesday night in protest. In less than an hour they covered every inch of street art that has made the tunnel an iconic piece of Atlanta for years.
They did not want the colorful designs along Krog Street walls to serve as a backdrop for the Krog Masquerade.

That masquerade ball is scheduled for Saturday night when the Krog Street Tunnel will host up to 2000 people celebrating the Halloween season, paying $50-$100 a ticket to attend.

The protest organizer said the "whitewashing" of the tunnel walls was a way of removing their decor from the event.

"We're not going to give away this art for free to somebody who is trying it make money off of it. Street art, public art, should be free for all. it shouldn't be privatized," he said.

Supporters of the event have taken to social media, stressing that the Krog Masquerade will go on as scheduled and are asking their online connections to "#MeetMeInTheTunnel."

Decatur is rich with parade history beginning way back in 1899 with Maury Mable. Ole' Maury donned his black silk top hat and paraded down Ponce de Leon Ave annually for 51 years.
Sometimes the parades were huge; sometimes they were just him!
Rolling holiday parades have been scarce of late.
That is, until the fun-loving HomeGrown Decatur gals decided to bring parading back to Decatur. We like Maury Mable's style!
