Decatur Time Machine for Mojo Pizza N Pub & Wilson's Ice Cream

Decatur's Wilson Ice Cream Co. was very popular for Decatur back in the late 40's and 50's
W. L. Wilson owner of the ice cream company said this new innovation of two horse drawn carts was a great way to deliver their frozen treats to the doors of Decatur customers. The two cart will have designated routes, one will be solely for the north side of Decatur while the other will remain south of the railroad tracks.
He pointed out this was developed to appeal to the children and in it's first week of operation proved to be highly successful.

Today this location is Mojo Pizza N Pub and they are very successful at this location.

Decatur Time Machine - The Decatur Presbyterian Church 1940 and 2014

CORRECTION ON EARLIER POST I posted this above church photo a couple of months ago and I wanted to correct the post, I listed it as Decatur First United Methodist, but this is Decatur's Presbyterian Church located at Sycamore and Church St. It was taken in 1940 from Church St. after a big snow fall Decatur had received.

---
This is a early Post Card showing the way it use to look, today it looks very different.

Comment: Anonymous said... Many thanks for posting the pictures of Decatur Presbyterian. The reason things look so different from then to now is that the old sanctuary from the 1940s no longer exists. The entire sanctuary structure was taken down and a new sanctuary built in its place. The stained-glass windows from the old sanctuary were saved and incorporated into todays' building.

Since 1956 Few Changes for Downtown Avondale Estates

Avondale Estates, GA  -  Now & Then

NOW & THEN - The theatre changed it's name from Avon Theatre to Towne Cinema. Check out the window air conditions in both photos. Top photo taken in 1956 and bottom photo Sept. 2012 Very few changes in 56 years.

History of Avondale Estates Info from: www.avondaleestates.org

The City of Avondale Estates was founded by George Francis Willis in 1924. The plans for his City were inspired by the trip he and his wife, Lottie, had taken to Stratford-upon-Avon. He aspired to recreate the majestic Tudor-Revival style architecture found at the birthplace of William Shakespeare in England. With the guidance of internationally known city planners, Willis proceeded to develop what would later be known as the only documented example of a “planned” city in the Southeast. Today it is named on the National Registrar of Historic Places.

They were in business from 1945-1990 and the place was very important to me during the 70s. I bought many a record and tape there! 60 Years of Music

Jerry Andrews sends this in.

This is neat. It's sort of a "Jukebox Time Machine" of music. Each of the years below connects to the best 20 hits of that year via a Jukebox. Click on a year, wait a few seconds, and a Jukebox will appear showing you 20 hits from that year to select from. You can play all 20 hits, or.. click on just those that you like. Enjoy the ride!

Founded in 1988 in Eau Claire, Wis., Erbert & Gerbert's Sandwich Shop is dedicated to serving better, more flavorful sandwiches than anyone else in the universe. Those 14 characters - including Halleys Comet, Jacob Bluefinger and Comet Morehouse - are now the names of the Erbert & Gerbert's sandwiches.

Erbert & Gerbert's 50 restaurant locations span the Midwest - in college towns, urban downtowns and rural centers - from Wisconsin to Minnesota, North Dakota, Colorado - and now in Georgia. In addition to in-store dining, Erbert & Gerbert's Sandwich Shops provide catering and delivery options.

Be James Bond for $ 5 Million

Sean Connery standing next to the famous Aston Martin DB5.
Where's my Bentley? - It's had its day, I'm afraid. - But it's never let me down. - M's orders, 007. ...

LONDON (Reuters) - James Bond's 1964 Aston Martin DB5, dubbed by auto auctioneers RM Auctions on Tuesday as the "world's most famous car," will go under the hammer in London in October and is expected to fetch over $5 million.

It is the first time the distinctive silver-colored car has been available to the public to buy.

It is one of two, and the sole remaining, of the original "007" DB5s that appeared on screen with Sean Connery behind the wheel in "Goldfinger" and " Thunderball ," RM Auctions said in a statement.

The model comes complete with its "Q-Branch" gadgets including machine guns, bullet-proof shield, revolving number plates, tracking device, removable roof panel, oil slick sprayer, nail spreader and smoke screen.

Several of the gadgets are fully operational, although the machine guns are not real.

The car is being sold by U.S. radio broadcaster Jerry Lee, who convinced the Aston Martin Lagonda factory to sell it for $12,000 in 1969, becoming its first and only ex-factory owner.

It has remained in his possession and has rarely been seen publicly over the past 40 or so years. Lee plans to use the proceeds from the sale for the Jerry Lee Foundation.

It will be auctioned on October 27.

Side note: Back in 1965 when Goldfinger was released they had the famous Bond car on tour.
My brother and I went to see the car at Briarcliff Village Shopping Center that mall was an open air mall like the original Lenox Square Mall. The guy who was there was the stuntman who crashed the car into a wall in Goldfinger.

Slot Car Racing @ Relics & Rarities

Decatur, GA

Relics & Rarities owner Warren Pickard has "Race Car Fever" He plans to build a Slot Car Racing track to add to his shop.
As you know Warren Pickard opened his ice cream / auto museum in September, it's located just across the street for Decatur High School.
His shop has three sections to it, as you enter the front door you would think you were in the 1950's, with the black and white floor to the vintage photos all around you do think your in the 50's , the ice cream (Blue Bell) is served in a cup or a cone, you can even get a cola in a old vintage glass bottle.
The Car museum is on the left side of the ice cream shop which has cars from the past that he has collected, mixed in with all those classic cars are relics from the past,Two of my favorites are a police call box that were attached to street light poles and a 1970's paper machine box which still had a 1970's newspaper still in it, he found it while chasing a bad guy through the streets and alleys of Atlanta, Warren is an Atlanta cop.
On the right side is where kids can sit in a real race car, play with old pinball type machines from the 1950's they can even get their picture taken with giant figures of "The Simpsons".
On this side is where Warren plans to build a slot car racing track, the kind that has several slots to race. He even will have the slot cars you can buy and bring back with you to race on Saturdays. Long time Decatur residents will remember the Decatur Hobby Shop/Speedway that had slot car tracks.
Warren Pickard always has a plan to make his shop better.
This new plan may call for a camera to film a photo finish.
Warren Pickard is truly in the Winners Circle.

Re-post of my Decatur Time Machine from July 2008

I had to do a repost of my Next Stop...Decatur Time Machine post from July 2008 after seeing the Mayor talk about Decatur this morning on the zip trip visit from CBS channel 46 Better Mornings Atlanta show.
I'm so glad someone looks at my Time Machine photos.

Pythagoras Masonic Temple Building

Notice that both pictures have Decatur cops,
coincidence, you be the judge.

106 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur. This building, constructed in 1924, was originally built to serve as a Masonic Lodge. The official name of this building is the Pythagoras Masonic Temple Building, at least according to a sign on the northwest corner of the building.

Today, the Masons still meet in the building, on the third floor. The first and second floors are rented out, however, and among the tenants are Dekalb County's Dispute Resolution Center and the Temple Gallery, which is run by the Dekalb Council For the Arts.

This is what I said on July 2, 2008

Take a look at Glenn's Pharmacy, that looks so classic. What they should do is restore that corner of the building back to look like that and have another pharmacy in that spot with a lunch counter, if they did that it would give that area alot more attention. I think Decatur needs to connect the new section of stores down towards Ted's Montana Grill with the old section of Decatur, something needs to be done to make a better transition between the two areas.

The single peaked at #9 on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart in late 2001 and #32 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart in early 2002.
