Why would they get rid of the icon of a sign ?
They should rebuild on like it, don't you think.

Thanks to Greg for sending in this link, also see his comment for another link.

The Toco Hills Theatre
3003 North Druid Hills Road
Atlanta, GA

Opened in 1964, this theater was almost a secret to those who knew it. Hidden in a small strip mall, it boasted one of the largest screens and seating areas in Atlanta. I think only the Fox challenged it in size while it was open.

It closed in 2000, after years of lack-luster attendance.

It was part of the Lefont chain of theaters, named after George Lefont, who often brought foreign-language and award-winning Cannes films to the city.

3rd Annual Beat the Street for Little Feet! Oct. 31, 2009

Hi, Your Next Stop...Decatur blog is just wonderful...must have taken quite a lot of work! Having just moved here this summer, I really appreciate this web site.
Could you please help us by sharing the following event information with your online community, membership, or blog? Everyone is invited to join in on the fun.

Thanks!
Rebecca Evans

3rd Annual Beat the Street for Little Feet!

Feet of all sizes are welcome! Join Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool families for a Saturday morning of running and fun on October 31, 2009 at 9AM in Candler Park. The race will include not only a 5K with special jog stroller division, but also a 1-mile race for younger participants, and a “fun run” for our community’s youngest runners. Stick around for the FREE post-race Children's Festival with live children’s music, a costume contest, face painting, food, and loads of festivities for the kids.

And for all you “Pete the Cat” fans, award-winning local artist James Dean has created another one-of-a-kind race T-shirt for the event. This year, Pete and kittens are in costume! To check out the new T-shirt design and to register for the race, visit our website, www.oakhurstcoop.com. You also can register at www.active.com or at the Big Peach Running Company in downtown Decatur.

The race will start at 9:00 AM and the Festival will be from 10:00 – 12:00 Noon. Come on out and cheer! We will be posting the 5K route on our website as well as posting notices on neighborhood newsletters, and in businesses, to be sure everyone that may be impacted is aware.

Not a runner, but love Pete the Cat? Sign up to be a ghost runner and still get your t-shirt. Check us out at: www.oakhurstcoop.com for more information.

Pete the Cat race T-shirt for ALL PRE-REGISTERED RACERS (by October 18, 2009 - We cannot guarantee you a t-shirt on race day unless you pre-register!).

Bring your worn out athletic shoes and we’ll RECYCLE them through Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program

Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool (OCP) is a nonprofit, parent-teacher cooperative established in 2005. The school was founded with the goal of creating an ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse community that is united both through its commitment to parent involvement in education, as well as fostering a respect for the environment. OCP is one of the few preschools which includes environmental education in its curriculum. By introducing environmental education to young children in a way that engages and intrigues them, we promote a gentle awareness of our impact on the world and how we can make a positive difference in the greater community.

Proceeds from this event help OCP provide tuition assistance and curriculum supplies.

A New BB & Que Joint for Decatur

Decatur, GA
Community BBQ will be located at 1361 Clairmont Rd, Decatur.

AJC
by mford

David Roberts, one-third of the triumvirate that was the original Sam & Dave’s in Marietta, is opening his own ‘cue joint, Community BBQ, in the old Epicurean space on Clairmont Road in Decatur.

“We’re basically just waiting on final inspections at this point,” Roberts told me by phone. “As soon as we get them, we’re good to go.”

Roberts is no stranger to barbecue, and the menu promises old fashioned ‘cue — Berkshire pork, including ribs, from Riverview Farms, beef ribs and brisket, chicken — with “standard” sides, as Roberts calls them. That is, of course, if you consider Roberts’ famous three-cheese mac-n-cheese a standard side — cheddar, Monterey jack and Parmesan meld together in cream and butter creating a goo fest for noodles. It’s the same mac-n-cheese he cooked at Sam & Dave’s.

Remembering Carrols Hamburgers

This Carrols was located in Tucker, GA.

Carrols was an offshoot of the Tastee Freeze company. Herb Slotnick bought the franchise rights for the New York area and started opening restaurants in the Syracuse, New York area in the early 1960s. They expanded through the years throughout New York state.

During the 1960s, a yellow slug character served as Carrols 1st mascot; he was replaced in 1974 by a young blonde lad wearing a tweed suit and a Fedora hat.

During the 1970s, Carrols tried their hand at serving fried chicken (like that served at KFC); their attempt was advertised as "Carrols Crunchy Country Chicken, I can't say it and I work here". Carrols also formed an agreement with Good Humor to sell several of GH's favorite ice cream novelty bars.

Carrols restaurant locations were converted to Burger King franchises in 1975. The original menu of Carrols, and the Carrols brand, then went overseas to Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Russia.

Atlanta Mayor Candidates at Emory

Nicole Anderson sends this in:

Hello!

Just wanted to let you know that Emory University will be hosting the candidates for mayor of Atlanta on Wednesday, October 14 (7PM) for spirited debate under the leafy trees of Emory Glenn Memorial Chapel (1660 North Decatur Road, 30322).

As the City of Atlanta drives economic development for the entire metro region and Georgia, it’s important for Emory and our surrounding communities [including Decatur!] to get to know the candidates who want to take the helm and lead the city for the next four years.

You and your readers are invited to come watch the debate unfold as the top candidates take the podium to state their case. Though you may not be voting in the election, this office certainly has a regional impact that is important to Atlanta’s neighbors. The forum will be moderated by Fox-5 anchor Russ Spencer and young alum & New York Times reporter Robbie Brown (Class of 2007).

Confirmed candidates include:

· Lisa Borders, city council president
· Peter Brownlowe, former Atlanta police officer
· Kyle Keyser, founder of Atlantans Together Against Crime
· Mary Norwood, city councilwoman
· Kasim Reed, state senator
· Jesse Spikes, attorney

This event is sponsored by Emory’s Office of Government Affairs, Emory’s Center for Ethics, the League of Women Voters of Atlanta-Fulton County, and the Clifton Community Partnership

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Thanks,
N

Slot Car Racing @ Relics & Rarities

Decatur, GA

Relics & Rarities owner Warren Pickard has "Race Car Fever" He plans to build a Slot Car Racing track to add to his shop.
As you know Warren Pickard opened his ice cream / auto museum in September, it's located just across the street for Decatur High School.
His shop has three sections to it, as you enter the front door you would think you were in the 1950's, with the black and white floor to the vintage photos all around you do think your in the 50's , the ice cream (Blue Bell) is served in a cup or a cone, you can even get a cola in a old vintage glass bottle.
The Car museum is on the left side of the ice cream shop which has cars from the past that he has collected, mixed in with all those classic cars are relics from the past,Two of my favorites are a police call box that were attached to street light poles and a 1970's paper machine box which still had a 1970's newspaper still in it, he found it while chasing a bad guy through the streets and alleys of Atlanta, Warren is an Atlanta cop.
On the right side is where kids can sit in a real race car, play with old pinball type machines from the 1950's they can even get their picture taken with giant figures of "The Simpsons".
On this side is where Warren plans to build a slot car racing track, the kind that has several slots to race. He even will have the slot cars you can buy and bring back with you to race on Saturdays. Long time Decatur residents will remember the Decatur Hobby Shop/Speedway that had slot car tracks.
Warren Pickard always has a plan to make his shop better.
This new plan may call for a camera to film a photo finish.
Warren Pickard is truly in the Winners Circle.
