ATLANTA, July 9, 2010 – The Summer 2010 class schedule has been released by The Cook’s Warehouse with its usual depth of cuisine and subject matter.

From “Simple Cooking 101 – Say Hello to Your Stovetop” to advanced, hands-on classes with local chefs, there are 150 classes to pick from and one for every age level and interest in this quarter’s classes.

Well-known local chefs – including Ron Eyester of Rosebud, Justin Keith of Food 101 and Jay Swift of 4th and Swift – will be at the head of a class, and visiting chefs include Giuliano Hazan of the famous Italian cooking family who will teach as well.

As far as cuisines, students may choose from Indian, Italian, sushi with sake, Thai, vegetarian, Panama, Mexican and seafood.

Also available are lessons in a variety of subject-oriented courses from Big Green Egg (grilling), no-cooking dinner parties, tailgating, tapas and hors d’oeuvres, pizza, one-dish dinners, salsas and sauces, pasta, or lemon and lavender, among others.

There are technique classes such as canning and preserving, dehydration, fondant, pâte à choux and eggs.

Although most classes include wine after cooking demonstrations, there are strictly “Wine” and “Wine and Food Pairings” classes as well.

And there are even kids’ classes and kids’ summer camps for ages 3 to 5, 6 to 9 or 10 to 17.

Look! It’s a dragon! It’s a dinosaur!

No, it’s a….

Wait a minute. What the heck is it?

It’s the new AJC Decatur Book Festival monster, and it doesn’t have a name.

You can be the one to name it! Propose the best name for the monster and win VIP access to the AJC DBF, September 3-5, and an iPad!

Name submissions are due July 18, so you’d better start brainstorming! Voting on the top five names runs from July 26 to August 1, and the winner and the monster’s name will be announced August 14 at the Roseanne Cash book signing at Agnes Scott College’s Presser Hall. Come on, everyone deserves a name—especially monsters! Name ours at Access Atlanta.

Road Trip to The Ritz

Talladega's Ritz Theatre (circa 1936) is considered one of the best surviving examples of the Art Deco mainstreet theatres of the 1930's. Careful restoration of the landmark's extraordinary facade - comprised exclusively of opaque structural glass, a common constructoin material used lavishly during the Deco period in buildings like the Rockerfeller Center in New York City - was completed in late 1997 with perfectly matched antique vitrolite glass by renowned St. Louis artisan Timothy J. Dunn.

The historic Ritz Theatre reopened on February 16, 1998 as the premiere performing arts center of East Central Alabama with a concert by the National Symphony String Quintet.

It's True, Coca-Cola bottle part of Fox Theatre's starlit sky

Myth no more: Coca-Cola bottle part of Fox Theatre's starlit sky

By Kristi E. Swartz

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Twinkle, twinkle, little …. Coca-Cola bottle?

A longstanding myth holds that one of the crystals embedded in the ceiling of the Fox Theatre is really a piece of a Coca-Cola bottle. see photo

This week, officials at the historic theater said it’s actually true.

The inside of the Atlanta landmark was designed to look like an indoor Arabian courtyard with a sky full of flickering stars. Rumor had it that many years ago one of the crystals had been replaced with a piece of a Coca-Cola bottle.

Officials said this week that two restoration staffers climbed above the ceiling to check it out.

"Last week two of our restoration colleagues braved the extreme attic temperatures, climbed above the sky searching for this piece of history.
