A New re-creation of TOCO HILL Sign is Standing Tall at Shopping Center

 Toco Hill Shopping Center

 From :  http://www.ajc.com
Q: The shopping center on the corner of North Druid Hills and LaVista roads in Atlanta recently put up a huge, new sign that says “Toco Hill.” Where does the name Toco Hill come from?
—Joni Pelta, Atlanta
A: “Toco” is believed to be a phrase that the original developer, Clyde Shepherd, learned from a Brazilian Indian when he built airbases in that country during World War II, according to past AJC stories and the current owners of the shopping center, Edens. It is reported to mean to “have better luck than you think you’ll have.” Shepherd reportedly then paired the word with a hill that once was on the DeKalb County property.
The original Toco Hill sign was put up along the road in the middle of the 20th century, and it was torn down in the late 1980s or early 90s, according to Edens, which is redeveloping Toco Hill shopping center. Local Pizzaiolo, Hudson Grille, the vintage furniture and home décor shop Westside Market and Spiller Park Coffee are among new and planned eateries and shops.
The re-creation of the sign is based on the original — before it was painted. The new sign is in the center’s new plaza area, according to Edens, and integrated into the gathering space, which will also have a fountain.

Late-night Tacos and Booze at Deep End

Deep End in the Old Fourth Ward building at 621 North Avenue NE.

The team behind The Pinewood Tippling Room in Decatur and Ponce City Market’s The Mercury is taking over the former 4th & Swift space, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mike Blydenstein, Brooks Cloud, and Julian Goglia will reportedly open a late-night destination called Deep End in the Old Fourth Ward building at 621 North Avenue NE.
Deep End will focus on a beverage program — not a surprise, considering the owners — and the kitchen will turn out tacos. Service will run until 3 a.m. Cloud tells the AJC the idea is to give Ponce City Market patrons a place to hang out after the Central Food Hall shuts down for the night. Considering Jay Swift cited competition from new restaurants at PCM as a direct reason for 4th & Swift’s shutter last summer, cornering the late-night market may be a good bet for the Pinewood gang.
Deep End is one of three new projects Blydenstein, Cloud, and Goglia are planning. They’re also working on two Italian spots in Buckhead’s former Prohibition space: Bar Americano and Bar Crema. The former will serve lunch and dinner, and the adjoining Bar Crema will offer take-away items, desserts, gelato, and coffees. Beverages will be inspired by classic cocktails and Italian aperitivos, and they will feature premium spirits and housemade ingredients. Chef Adam Waller is leaving Bocado in Westside to run the kitchen at Bar Americano, reports the AJC.
Owners hope to have Deep End, Bar Americano, and Bar Crema open later this year.

Repaving of Downtown Streets this Week

 From thedecaturminute.com

Update:  Downtown paving has been postponed until Tuesday, July 25.

The impact

Weather permitting, several downtown Decatur streets will be repaved beginning Monday, July 24, following completion of the present milling work concluding — ideally — on Friday, July 21.
This is an ambitious effort and is being done to complete as much work as possible before the City Schools reconvene on August 1. It’s expected the work will take 2-3 days.

How to manage

North McDonough and the two intersections will remain open to two-way vehicle traffic. However, there will be temporary lane closures and traffic delays during the work. East Howard will be closed to through traffic for a short period when it is being resurfaced.
Vehicular access on North Candler Street, East Howard Avenue and Barry Street will be limited and on-street parking will not be available on the affected streets during the work. Pedestrian access will remain open throughout the project area.

Ponce City Market Planning a Second Phase

From  http://www.atlantaloop.com
Ponce City Market, a mixed-use project that has been a boon to the Beltline, is planning its second phase, but not everyone is happy about it.
Cashelle Rose, President of the Fourth Ward Alliance, said PCM’s developer, Jamestown, is proposing three new buildings. The buildings would include a hotel, and commercial and residential spaces.
Renderings for the project were not provided to Atlanta Loop, but Curbed Atlanta was able to obtain one rendering which you can see by clicking here. According to Curbed, the hotel would be constructed on Glen Iris Drive and the other two buildings would be constructed on PCM’s southeastern corner. WSB-TV reports that one of the towers would be built on top of a parking deck.

N. McDonough Street, Candler and McDonough Intersections Milling Begins Monday, July 17

From thedecaturminute.com

Weather permitting, North McDonough Street and the Candler and McDonough intersections at East Howard Avenue and College Avenue will be milled in preparation for final resurfacing starting on Monday, July 17. The work should take 2-3 days. This work is part of the North McDonough Streetscape Improvements and the Railroad Crossing Improvements at Candler and McDonough Streets.

Project details
The North McDonough Streetscape Improvements include reducing North McDonough to two vehicle lanes, providing for wider sidewalks, and installing a 2-way “cycle track” on the west side of the street, along with traditional streetscape improvements and on-street parking. The project also features significant “green infrastructure” improvements to improve storm water quality.
The Railroad Crossing Improvements will significantly improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, further encouraging those who live in Winnona Park, the McDonough-Adams-Kings Highway community, and other neighborhoods south of the CSX rail corridor to walk and bike into downtown Decatur.

The improvements will provide gentler slopes on the north side of both crossings resulting in an accessible path for persons in wheelchairs or those using strollers, and a much safer route for all located outside the railroad crossing gates. Presently, pedestrians and bicyclists have to share the roadway with vehicles at these crossings.
In addition to improvements at the crossings, there will now be new pedestrian crosswalks where none presently exist — on the east side of both intersections and just north of the Candler crossing connecting to the sidewalk along the old Depot property.
Finally, improved vehicular mobility is also a project priority. Both crossings will include new traffic signals on both sides which will allow protected left turns on all legs of the two crossings.

Undate Info on Northlake Mall

I missed this from last week.
 update info on Northlake Mall

 From: http://www.tonetoatl.com
New owner "committed to project."

I have received a number of emails and comments about the status of Northlake Mall. To that end, I followed up with Tony Ruggeri, President of ATR Corinth Partners, the Dallas based firm that purchased Northlake Mall in early 2016.   Mr. Ruggeri says he and his firm are "committed to the Northlake Mall project" and that things are progressing, albeit slower than he or residents may have hoped.

A 20 year veteran of the commercial real estate industry, Ruggeri has developed, redeveloped, owned, and managed over 2 million square feet of commercial real estate.
Northlake Mall, originally built in 1971, was for much of its life owned by mall powerhouse Simon Property Group.  The 962,000 square foot mall is located off I-285, bordered by Briarcliff Road, Henderson Mill Road and Northlake Parkway,  and is today anchored by JCPenney, Sears, and Macy's. (Former anchor Kohl's closed last year.)

Steel City Pops Coming to Decatur

From: http://www.tonetoatl.com/2017/05/exclusive-steel-city-pops-secures-first.html#more
Popsicle purveyor coming to Decatur.

Steel City Pops, a Birmingham based popsicle business, is planning to make its Atlanta debut later this summer in Decatur.  The new store is expected to open at 312 Church Street, in a space originally planned for Guy Wong's Big Boss Chinese restaurant.

Although as recently as this past December, Wong was "testing" dishes for Big Boss at his Westside eatery Le Fat, plans for the 312 Church property have been abandoned.  I spoke to Wong earlier this week and he confirmed that "we are not moving forward with that project."

Wong first announced plans for Big Boss in 2013, but since then, he has opened Le Fat with Mike Blum, Ton Ton in Ponce City Market and One Rooster, also in partnership with Blum, on the Westside.  Wong is no doubt plenty busy with his new restaurants, as well as his original Miso Izakaya, so perhaps it's best that he hold off for now.

City of Decatur has Purchased United Methodist Children’s Home

From thedecaturminute.com
On April 25, 2017 City of Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett, the UMCH President and CEO, Rev. Hal Jones, and Debby Stikes, Chair of the UMCH Board of Trustees, met to sign the sale agreement for the $40 Million purchase of the approximately 77 acre UMCH property adjacent to the southeastern city limits of the City of Decatur.
Mayor Patti Garrett said, “We are so excited to keep this project moving forward and I am proud to be able to represent the Decatur City Commission in executing the contract that will start the process of making the purchase happen.”
Proceeds of the sale will support the UMCH mission in new communities according to Rev. Jones, who said “we are committed to reaching out to, and serving, the alarming and growing number of children and families who are in crisis. The sale of the Decatur property helps us expand this ministry across North Georgia.” Board Chair Debby Stikes added that “preserving the Moore Chapel and the gravesite of UMCH’s founder Rev. Dr. Jesse Boring was very important to the Board, to members of our alumni group, and to countless others across North Georgia who partner with us in this ministry. We are delighted with the City’s support in honoring the memories created on this property.”
