Remembering Carrols Hamburgers
This Carrols was located in Tucker, GA.
Carrols was an offshoot of the Tastee Freeze company. Herb Slotnick bought the franchise rights for the New York area and started opening restaurants in the Syracuse, New York area in the early 1960s. They expanded through the years throughout New York state.
During the 1960s, a yellow slug character served as Carrols 1st mascot; he was replaced in 1974 by a young blonde lad wearing a tweed suit and a Fedora hat.
During the 1970s, Carrols tried their hand at serving fried chicken (like that served at KFC); their attempt was advertised as "Carrols Crunchy Country Chicken, I can't say it and I work here". Carrols also formed an agreement with Good Humor to sell several of GH's favorite ice cream novelty bars.
Carrols restaurant locations were converted to Burger King franchises in 1975. The original menu of Carrols, and the Carrols brand, then went overseas to Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Russia.

Slot Car Racing @ Relics & Rarities
Decatur, GA
Relics & Rarities owner Warren Pickard has "Race Car Fever" He plans to build a Slot Car Racing track to add to his shop.
As you know Warren Pickard opened his ice cream / auto museum in September, it's located just across the street for Decatur High School.
His shop has three sections to it, as you enter the front door you would think you were in the 1950's, with the black and white floor to the vintage photos all around you do think your in the 50's , the ice cream (Blue Bell) is served in a cup or a cone, you can even get a cola in a old vintage glass bottle.
The Car museum is on the left side of the ice cream shop which has cars from the past that he has collected, mixed in with all those classic cars are relics from the past,Two of my favorites are a police call box that were attached to street light poles and a 1970's paper machine box which still had a 1970's newspaper still in it, he found it while chasing a bad guy through the streets and alleys of Atlanta, Warren is an Atlanta cop.
On the right side is where kids can sit in a real race car, play with old pinball type machines from the 1950's they can even get their picture taken with giant figures of "The Simpsons".
On this side is where Warren plans to build a slot car racing track, the kind that has several slots to race. He even will have the slot cars you can buy and bring back with you to race on Saturdays. Long time Decatur residents will remember the Decatur Hobby Shop/Speedway that had slot car tracks.
Warren Pickard always has a plan to make his shop better.
This new plan may call for a camera to film a photo finish.
Warren Pickard is truly in the Winners Circle.

DeKalb hopes Arabia becomes new model school
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When DeKalb County officials first conceived of Arabia Mountain High School, they meant to relieve crowded campuses in one of metro Atlanta’s most booming suburbs.
Then the boom went bust. Enrollment eased. And the public school, which is located outside I-285 in southeast DeKalb, opened last month with a very different plan: A state-of-the-art, $48-million facility boasting some of the newest and most challenging high school magnet programs open to students countywide. If they decided to come.
Now, seven weeks since opening, enrollment at DeKalb’s newest high school is on target with 1,016 students in grades 9-11. The school will add a senior class next year, bringing it to about 1,400.

2nd annual Park Renewal Day Nov. 7th
Park Renewal Day to Return This November
Kelly Cheek of Renewal Design-Build sends this in:
September 24, 2009, – After the success of last year’s inaugural event, participants will once again return to Decatur’s Dearborn Park on Saturday, November 7th to root out invasive plants for the 2nd annual Park Renewal Day competition. Last year, this joint effort of Renewal Design-Build, the DeKalb County Parks Department, and City of Decatur’s Active Living Division, had over 100 participants – all competing for prize money – clear more than an acre of English ivy and Chinese privet from the park. Dearborn was chosen for the competition again due to the large amount of invasive species and debris not yet cleared from the park.
This year’s participating teams will compete for big prize money with the five highest-scoring groups taking home $1,000, $500, $300, $200, and $100, respectively. Each team’s assigned plot will be scored by County Park experts and local celebrities. The judging panel for this year’s event will include Decatur’s own Mayor Bill Floyd.
Teams eligible to participate in the competition include school organizations, Boy Scout troops, religious groups, and any group of people willing to come together, help the park, and raise funds. A number of last year’s teams competed for charitable causes. The winning team, “Invasive and Persuasive,” donated their prize money to the group’s church, and third prize winner, the Decatur High School Bulldog Booster Club, handed over their winnings to a competing team of Decatur High students trying to raise funds to attend President Obama’s inauguration.
Prizes will be awarded after the competition, along with food and live music.
The 2nd annual Park Renewal Day will take place on Saturday, November 7th at Dearborn Park. For more information on Park Renewal Day and how to register, visit ParkRenewalDay.com.

DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes will lead a public relations campaign to encourage county residents to talk to federal census workers.

The 3,988,770 items checked out during the fiscal year that ended June 30 account for a 6 percent increase from 2007. The increase came despite having eight of the 22 branches closed for renovations.
