Ponce de Leon Construction near Deepdene Park

From a post at Fresh Loaf : "According to the county, the construction is part of a streetscape improvement that will result in an eight-foot-wide sidewalk similar to those winding through the other greenspaces along Ponce."

At first I thought they were going to widen Ponce in that area.
Now I know the answer Streetscape Improvements.

Run Decatur Run

By April Hunt

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A little Decatur Envy could be healthy.
Or so city leaders and organizers of an upcoming 5K race hope. The DeKalb County city has become the first municipality to sign up to participate -- with city residents, workers or anyone else who wants to race under the Team Decatur banner -- in what has been a corporate event for 28 years.

And the city challenged other communities to join in a little healthy competition when the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk race day comes next month.

“It’s not just a way to get active,” said Cheryl Burnette, the city’s assistant director of active living. “You can come out and meet people you may never have met before. It’s truly for the community.”

Decatur is used to trying things first. For more than a decade, the town has widened sidewalks, planted trees and added streetlights to entice pedestrians downtown.

The city’s main drag -- Ponce de Leon -- and Decatur Square have since filled with pubs, outdoor cafes, boutiques and condos that many other cities cite as their model when renovating their center cities.

FARM-TO-SCHOOL COOKING CLASS FOR CITY SCHOOLS OF DECATUR CAFETERIA WORKERS

From Jim Brams of Cook's Warehouse

THE COOK’S WAREHOUSE HOLDS SECOND FARM-TO-SCHOOL COOKING CLASS FOR CITY SCHOOLS OF DECATUR CAFETERIA WORKERS

Locally Grown, Freshly Prepared Meals

for Decatur Schoolchildren

ATLANTA, August 2, 2010 – Mary Moore, founder and CEO of The Cook’s Warehouse, hosted the second half-day Farm-to-School “cooking workshop” for cafeteria workers from the City Schools of Decatur.

Brad Bryant, Georgia State Department of Education superintendent, was among those who addressed the group after breakfast. Mr. Bryant related how he had observed the same type of program in Baltimore, run by a local chef, and told the cafeteria work force how vital they were to education since healthy school meals have changed the learning curve of young eaters.

Also addressing the group:

· Amanda Dew Manning, program manager of the Georgia state School Nutrition Program;

· Erin Croome, Farm-to-School coordinator of Georgia Organics;

· Meagan Mohammadione, clinical dietician of the Emory Bariatric Center, and

· Anujah Bata of Destiny Organics

After breakfast, Moore led the hands-on session with Megan McCarthy, a healthy lifestyle consultant and chef, and Seth Freedman, a chef and personal culinary services provider, in a presentation of quick and tasty, low-fat/healthy recipes that adapt well to large numbers, including:

· Chicken, watermelon and feta salad

· Roasted fresh tomato sauce over pasta

· Oven-roasted chicken with tomato jus and mashed potatoes

· Apple and Blueberry cobblers with whipped cream

The recipes use low-fat ingredients and culinary tricks, such as whipping the potatoes with freshly made chicken stock instead of butter or milk, and the use of fresh herbs to allow full-flavor dishes with a lower salt content. The three dozen attendees prepared all the recipes and ate them for lunch afterward.

The first class in the series last November began with pre-cooking skills including professional and safe knife handling and seasoning food properly.

This new Decatur school-lunch program is a joint project of Matthew Rao of Rao Design Studio; The Cook's Warehouse; Georgia Organics, and the Atlanta Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier International. It is meant to teach easy, efficient and inspired cooking to those front-line cafeteria workers who feed our children one or two meals, five days a week.

The recent attention to healthy school lunches began with UK Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver (Food TV’s “Naked Chef”) who just hosted the ABC-TV program “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” in West Virginia. He began his drive in the UK when he learned that this generation of British schoolchildren was the first in decades not expected to live as long as their parents. The UK children’s diet was identified as the primary cause.

In the U.S., First Lady Michelle Obama has expanded her “Let’s Move!” campaign by assigning White House sous chef Sam Kass to lead the “Chefs Move to Schools” initiative. Mrs. Obama hosted 700 chefs at the White House this June to energize this initiative and Mary Moore attended the daylong ceremonies.

And some vendors of The Cook’s Warehouse donated gifts, including:

· Messermeister: A knife roll (a canvas, roll-up carry-case that chefs use to carry knives outside the kitchen) including one 8” Chef’s knife

· The Cook’s Warehouse: A pastry brush, carbon steel peeler, pastry scraper, and CW cap

· Cuisinart: Subsidized the cost of three food processors

The Cook’s Warehouse ( www.cookswarehouse.com ) is greater Atlanta’s premier gourmet cookware store and cooking school with three locations in Midtown, Decatur and Brookhaven. It offers more than 15,000 products for the kitchen and operates the largest avocational cooking school in the Southeast, conducting more than 600 classes yearly, often taught by local chefs, and has a large web-based delivery-by-post site.

Owned and operated by founder Mary S. Moore, The Cook’s Warehouse also retails high-end appliances; conducts private cooking classes for unique celebrations and corporate events, and is a pro bono partner with virtually every major cooking event and gourmet association in Atlanta.

Decatur Students in Trailers , Administrators in school

Decatur, GA

Decatur, GA

Dozens of Decatur students will attend classes in trailers this year at the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, while about 50 administrators run their offices out of a former elementary school.
--

--

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Dozens of Decatur students will return to classes Monday in trailers while their administrators work from inside a half-empty school.

City Schools of Decatur officials say the trailers are temporary for one year while they finish building a new school.

But parents don’t understand why the 40 administrators who work out of the former Westchester Elementary School don’t spend the year in trailers instead.

“Anyone who is familiar with Westchester can see it’s a school built for children,” said Emily Kandetzki, who has four children in Decatur schools. “It’s heart-wrenching to walk into a classroom and see them filled with big black leather chairs and administrators.”

Westchester was built as an elementary school, complete with bathrooms in each classroom, brightly colored walls, cubbies and low-hanging hooks. A playground sits on a large grassy field.

The small district will use 10 trailers this school year while it finishes construction of a new school at the site of the former Fifth Avenue school, communications director Bruce Roaden said.

The new school, which is slated to open in Aug. 2011, will be for fourth and fifth graders. Renovations are also under way at the middle and high schools.

The landmark restaurant on Buford Highway will begin serving at 5:30 a.m., with mostly the same menu and wait staff but with a fresh coat of paint and a new management team, property owner Lynda Alley said.

They performed together for the first time in the school chorus which sang James Taylor's "A Junkie's Lament" for a talent show. They became a duo in their high school English class, where they wrote songs and tested them out on their teacher. (They still keep in touch with his mom.) As The Indigo Girls, Amy and Emily have traveled far since those days. Grammy Award winners, they may be best known for their hits "Shame on You" and "Closer to Fine."

South DeKalb County will get another police precinct.

By Megan Matteucci

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The DeKalb County Police Department is opening a mini precinct at River and Flakes Mill roads, spokesman Officer Jason Gagnon said.

“They are in that location to better serve the citizens in south DeKalb,” Gagnon said.

Gagnon said the expense is minimal because the county already owns the building and uses it as a fire station. No additional officers will be hired, but officers from other areas will be moved to staff the new precinct.

“We’re looking at our manpower and how to best utilize the staffing we have,” Gagnon said.

This will be the county’s sixth precinct.

Avondale Hires First City Planner

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Avondale Estates has hired its first city planner and economic development director, to help realize its dream of remaking its downtown.

Keri Stevens began the new job on July 13. Her first job will be to bring Avondale’s comprehensive plan up-to-date, while also reviewing plans for its lake district and Tudor Village downtown.

The small city has been working for nearly two years on how to best lure small shops and high-end housing and offerings that have taken off in neighboring Decatur.

Stevens has experience with both small and historic cities on that front. She most recently was a senior urban planner with Pond and Company, handling project management and work on a mixed-use overlay district for the city of Griffin.

Decatur's Mayor Says a Wider Tunnel is Needed for Safety

At the Decatur City Commission meeting a couple of weeks ago they approved the North McDonough Streetscape project, at that time Mayor Bill Floyd made a comment about looking into expanding the tunnel that's underneath the railroad tracks, located on East College Ave. and Howard Ave to help improve pedestrian safety. It is used by Agnes Scott students walking to downtown Decatur.
As a kid my brothers and I used it all the time walking to Decatur to go to the show as we lived behind Agnes Scott College.

“The Fast and The Furious V” will be doing some filming in Atlanta.

From AJC The Buzz

You (and your car!) oughta be in pictures…

the_fast__furious

Buzz will not rest until all of you are famous.

Our latest opportunity is for you and, potentially, your car!

“The Fast and The Furious V” will be doing some filming in Atlanta. Specifically, the film will shoot some party scenes near the Georgia Dome.

That’s where you and your wheels come in. From 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, at the Atlanta Marriott Century Center off I-85 near Clairmont Road, casting crews will be on the hunt for extras.

(The hotel’s address and phone number: 2000 Century Boulevard NE, Atlanta, GA 30345; 404-325-0000.)

Because the film, which will once again star Vin Diesel, is to be set in Brazil, the casting folks will be looking for people who appear to be from there. They’re interested in “good looking” folks ages 18 to 30.

They’re also looking for cars to star as automotive extras. “Custom street racers,” whatever that means, are especially welcome.

But the bottom line is this: hot looking people and hot looking cars, come on.

If you’re interested please e-mail pictures of you and your ride, along with your age and contact info to ff5extras@gmail.com.

Mary Mac's shares its recipes

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It’s an Atlanta landmark that’s been around for more than six decades, serving Southern favorites such as tomato pie, macaroni and cheese and fried chicken.

The only thing richer than the food at Mary Mac’s Tea Room is perhaps the restaurant’s history and popular customs. From filling out your order form and getting that first complimentary cup of pot likker with a piece of corn bread, to its famous diners (Dalai Lama, President Jimmy Carter, Hillary Rodham Clinton and James Brown, to name a few), Mary Mac’s has certainly made its mark.

This week, John Ferrell, who took over ownership of the tea room in 1994, will share 125 recipes in his new cookbook, “Mary Mac’s Tea Room: 65 Years of Recipes From Atlanta’s Favorite Dining Room” (Andrews McMeel, $27.99).
