Black Friday Comes Earlier for Walmart

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Wal-Mart plans to open most of its stores at midnight the night of Thanksgiving, the company announced Monday, becoming the latest in a series of retailers to expand hours to lure shoppers who want to get a head-start hunting for holiday bargains.

American retailers have increasingly expanded their hours on Black Friday to get ahead of the competition, but now the kickoff is creeping into Thanksgiving Day.

Sears Holdings Corp., which operates Kmart and Sears stores, is opening Sears on Thanksgiving Day for the first time this year. Toys R Us plans to open its stores at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving Day and stay open through Friday. And Gap Inc.'s Old Navy stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day as they were last year.

On Monday, the world's largest retailer also offered shoppers a preview of the discounts it plans. Starting at midnight the night of Thanksgiving, all Walmarts will offer $9 Wrangler jeans and $15 tubs of Legos. Starting at 5 a.m. Friday, they'll sell Hewlett-Packard Co. laptops with 15.6-inch screens for $298, Emerson 32-inch LCD HDTV TVs for $198 and Kodak digital cameras for $59.

How many attractions for downtown Atlanta

Photo of London Eye from janosburg.net
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Rachel Tobin

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With developers proposing a $200 million replica of the London Eye ferris wheel attraction for downtown Atlanta, the natural question is: What's next?
Atlanta has become a beacon for inventive -- and sometimes screwy -- ideas.

Downtown already has horse-drawn carriages. How about pedicabs?

How about flooding the railroad tracks in the area called “The Gulch” to create a water feature? Or a casino at Underground Atlanta? And isn't downtown Atlanta missing a pirate museum?

Some of the ideas that have been floated for downtown have often seemed starry-eyed.
Perhaps the biggest and wackiest idea of all also proved the most visionary. When Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympic Games, it showed that dreaming big can pay off.

One of downtown’s most popular attractions, the Georgia Aquarium, was certainly an “if they build it, will they come” exercise. For Georgia Aquarium benefactor Bernie Marcus, a founder of Home Depot, his vision has been remarkable. He’s adding a $110 million dolphin museum to his $290 million aquarium that has been attracting over 2 million people a year.

New Department Store Coming to Atlanta

By Arielle Kass

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The city of Alpharetta has cleared the way for the Von Maur department store to enter North Point Mall next year.
A spokeswoman for the Iowa department store chain said in an e-mail that that city's design review board on Friday morning approved Von Maur's plans to gut the former Belk space. Von Maur will expand the two-story store to 140,000 square feet, from 115,000.

The 25-store chain plans to make the North Point location a flagship space for further expansion in Atlanta and the rest of the south. That store will bring an estimated 230 jobs and is expected to open in November 2011.

Banks do battle with stagecoaches and airships

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wells Fargo is breaking out stagecoaches. SunTrust Banks is floating blimps.

As competition for customers gets more cutthroat, some of metro Atlanta’s biggest financial players are waging an old-school marketing war. It's all about grabbing attention, preserving market share and growing client bases.

In a bank branding battle metro Atlanta hasn’t seen in some time, Wells Fargo and SunTrust are lobbing the most visible salvos.

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo entered metro Atlanta when it bought the city’s No. 2 bank, Wachovia, in 2008.

Since then, Wells Fargo has launched a barrage of ads touting its community commitment and last month changed the signs on about 200 metro area branches and its signature Atlantic Station tower overlooking the Downtown Connector.

Conan Tonight on TBS Please Stand By

From : http://newsroom.mtv.com

OK, OK, congrats and everything to Conan O'Brien, who returns to late-night TV in just a few hours. But we greet TBS' "Conan" with more than a twinge of sadness, because it means saying goodbye to Unemployed Conan.

This is the bearded fellow who transformed a humiliating "Tonight Show" ouster into a creative rebirth. He embraced the glories and terrors of Twitter, making us giggle all the way. He crisscrossed America during his sold-out "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour." He popped off a killer promo effort for his new show — filled with wacky YouTube videos, a 24-hour live "CoCo Cam" and a big, shameless orange blimp — refashioning himself as a kind of renegade presence within the entertainment mainstream.

Decatur High football reunion recalls different time

Photo shows Decatur High School Football field( circa 1940's or 50's) from Ga State Library collection.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
by Bill Banks
For the AJC
Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, a dozen or so members of Decatur High’s remarkable 1949 and 1950 football teams, along with a team manager and a couple of cheerleaders, will gather at their old stomping grounds, possibly for the last time.
Now in their late 70s, once again they will shake loose the cobwebs of distant, and for some, rapidly dimming memories of those back-to-back state championships. More than that however, as they line the field before Decatur’s game against Lovett, they will offer a tangible link to an era that has almost vanished.
“We played in leather helmets, no face mask,” said Bob Reed, a starting guard on the 1950 team. “My senior year we got black plastic helmets, and we were uptown. But they still slid all over your head. After a game, you knew you didn’t do a good job without having scrapes all over your cheekbones.”
It was a time of obsessive segregation, where not only Decatur and all opponents were white, but Decatur High itself had separate buildings for boys and girls. Back then the city closed shop on Friday nights, except for a clothier named Ted Levy, who gave the star of the game a free sweater.
“I had mine for years,” Reed said. “Made of wool, but it wore like iron.”
Decatur went 25-0 in 1949-50, but that was merely the golden harvest of an extremely fertile period. From 1943-53 the Bulldogs went 103-11-6 and never lost more than three games in a season. No one can explain what was in the city’s water back then to reap such a luxurious crop.
"Great DeKalb Clean-Up" Removed 2,660 Pounds of Litter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
By Megan Matteucci
More than 2,660 pounds of litter was removed from DeKalb County streets last month.
The trash was collected during the county’s “Great DeKalb Clean-Up,” which was held during weekends in October.
The clean-up was designed to address litter-covered areas, including Buford Highway, Flat Shoals Parkway, Memorial Drive and Covington Highway, public safety director William “Wiz” Miller announced Tuesday.
The clean-up, which included county workers and volunteers, targeted “unsightly debris and illegal road signs,” Miller said. Code enforcement officers also issued more than 120 citations for illegal signs.
Howdy Folks! Big Tex Cantina Coming to Decatur
Did you hear the news. ? Fox Bros. BBQ will open a new place in downtown Decatur and the name of it reminded me of the Texas State Fair, you know the larger than life cowboy that greets people to the entrance of The Texas State Fair.
Photo from Flickr member: What Makes The Pie Shops Tick?'s
Read the story below.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is from:
The Blissful Glutton web site.
I was just informed by Jonathan Fox that he and his brother, Justin, have started demolition on their new spot: The Big Tex Cantina. The restaurant, which gets its name from Jonathan’s nickname, is located in Downtown Decatur. The Fox Bros. are converting three old spaces–that formerly housed Nathalie’s Fish House, Levi’s Key West Fish House, and an old club–into one large space. Big Tex will be a departure from Fox Bros. BBQ according to Jonathan, since they’ll have a much larger kitchen and more room to play around with the “Texican” menu, which draws many influences from their home state of Texas. Look for items such as chicken fried steak, homemade corn dogs, stacked enchiladas (their mom’s recipe), tacos, chalupas and more. The Cantina will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night. Jonathan maintains the restaurant will still be family friendly despite having a fully-stocked bar and a pool room complete with darts. The restaurant is slated to open in late Winter or early Spring.
On Saturday, the San Francisco-based bank will begin installing the biggest branding symbols in its history at a prime location next to the Downtown Connector.
A construction helicopter will lift three massive signs atop the building at 171 17th Street in Atlantic Station that used to sport the Wachovia name.
Wells Fargo bought Wachovia in 2009 and is completing the brand overhaul. Wachovia’s signs were removed in September.
The new north and south facing signs on the building are 11 feet tall, while the Wells Fargo logo facing the interstate measures 27 by 29 feet.This sign, recently photographed in Virginia Beach, Va., will replace Wachovia signs atop the office tower at 171 17th Street in Atlantic Station. Signs, including this one that measures 27 feet high by 29 feet wide, are the largest that Wells Fargo has ever installed on one of its office buildings.
